It was a timid year: Nintendo came late to the party with a short but good list of announcements, Sony was even quieter, Xbox kept its strategy to throw a lot of games, but nothing spectacular, and finally, Ubisoft brought back the old school format of speakers on stage with live music aimed directly at me: Star Wars and Japanese taiko drums for the new Assassin's Creed.
But what really shined were the "small" conferences, like the Wholesome Direct and Latin America Games Showcase, which became very good.
This year, Steam prepared a neat overview page of the event to find all the games showcased.
State of Play
Concord is the big AAA CGI trailer of this year. I always love to see some sci-fi and space opera, but this looks a lot like Guardians of the Galaxy.
It would be nice to share the credits to know which studio made it, by the way.
Showing the gameplay just after was maybe not a great idea.
I just finished Astro's Playroom, it's a good platformer and a great showcase of PlayStation history, don't overlook it.
Astro Bot is the deserved sequel.
Summer Game Fest
Funny to see another French climbing game after Jusant, but Cairn looks very different and no less interesting.
The best video editing synced with music goes to The First Descendant.
Day of the Devs
The developer of Building relationships describes it “like A Short Hike, but stupid”, I’m fully on board for this.
While Waiting reminds me of the hilarious mobile game Hidden My Game By Mom but with a more welcoming art direction.
Devolver Direct
Possessor(s) is the new game from Heart Machine
Tenjutsu animated trailer has been made by the Parisian studio CRCR. Well done !
Xbox Games Showcase
Looks like Mixtape is building on the strengths of The Artful Escape, I hope the best for Beethoven & Dinosaur for their "second album".
Blizzard knows how to make a trailer, even for the game I don't care.
Others nice trailers from the Xbox event:
-
The surprise JRPG from Montpellier: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
I recommend listening to the soundtrack EP, which is a really nice companion to the trailer. -
Interesting (more modern, less B movie) return from Joanna Dark in the Perfect Dark gameplay reveal.
Nintendo Direct
The very anticipated Metroid Prime 4 reveal video is a bit too flat, but the introduction and conclusion scenes offer us a glimpse of the beautiful and emblematic music of the series. And I love this logo!
